Barcelona make merry at Mallorca

Barcelona make merry at Mallorca

Sunday, 19 November 2006

Two goals from Eidur Gudjohnsen set FC Barcelona on the way to returning to the top of the Primera División with a 4-1 win at RCD Mallorca.

Late goals seal win
Sevilla FC had taken over first place last night with a 3-0 defeat of Valencia CF, but Barcelona now lead by one point again. Gudjohnsen broke the deadlock with a tap-in late in the first half and struck again after being set up by Andrés Iniesta on 58 minutes. Víctor pulled one back for Mallorca with 20 minutes left but after Fernando Varela was sent off eight minutes from time for a second booking when he fouled Deco, Iniesta and substitute Santiago Ezquerro sealed the victory.

Contenders triumph
Real Zaragoza end the weekend in fourth place, one point behind Real Madrid CF and four adrift of Barcelona, thanks to a 3-0 win against CG Tarragona. Pablo Aimar, Óscar González and Gerard Piqué scored in a 20-minute second-half period. Club Atlético de Madrid are fifth after also scoring three without reply against UD Levante; Fernando Torres's first-half penalty was followed by a red card for Levante's César Martín and two Maniche goals.
Pandiani heroicsRecreative lie sixth as Javi Guerrero and Ikechukwu Uche goals sent CA Osasuna into the relegation zone. Real Betis Balompié moved out of the bottom three with a 0-0 draw against bottom side Real Sociedad de Fútbol, while RCD Espanyol eased their worries thanks to Walter Pandiani's 94th-minute goal securing a 3-2 win against Athletic Club Bilbao. Villarreal CF also moved up as Rodolfo Arruabarrena's own goal condemned Getafe CF to a 1-0 defeat. Deportivo play Celta de Vigo in the late game.
